For my parents ’66 was a big year as my birth dominated their headlines. In comparison, the rest of the planet was listening to the news over crackly FM radios: the U.S. was fighting the Vietnam war, the space race was heating up, the most popular band was the Beatles and John Lennon made the infamous statement “we are more popular than Jesus!” (not something I agree with by the way.) Simon & Garfunkel released their famous song “Sounds of Silence” and the movie Dr. Zhivago was released. Mini-skirts were inching further UP…wards (I take full responsibility for this!) and heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali declared himself a conscientious objector and refused to enlist for the Vietnam war.

Twelve years later I started my photographic career with a Kodak 110 camera and my first photo was of the family Bulldog (already a very creative composition.) I was hooked and within four years I photographed my first wedding of which the profits paid for an old-style chemical darkroom. After school I ran my varsities photographic club while still doing weddings on the side. My two year army call-up came and after basic training I applied for and got the job as a staff photographer. I did some work for the national S.A.N.D.F. magazine called Paratus but my main job was running the base darkroom and doing the photography for Insizwa our base newspaper. With an unlimited budget I was in photo-heaven and I experimented to my heart’s content. I completed my military service having recorded 43000+ photos on army time. I became professionally involved in the photographic industry and started a Foto First One Hour Lab in Johannesburg. I did every type of photography imaginable, more weddings than I could count, commercial work, pack shots, industrial, modelling portfolios, travel, pets, and sport, specialising in golf and golf courses. I published the first ever South African Golf calendar with a good friend and great photographer Neville Petersen. I worked with the Complete Golfer magazine and did many shoots for them including the Sun City Million Dollar and the S.A. Open. The invention of the digital camera forced the closure of my lab as my core business was photo developing for the whole of Jozi’s insurance industry and I started an I.T. company to get by. It wasn’t long though before I couldn’t resist the urge to pick up a camera again. To cut a long story short I’m again living my passion… Because of my background I am an all-rounder and I capture all sorts of events but my first love is landscapes, fly fishing and natural light portraits of people in these environments. Neville and I still team up to do weddings and big events. We provide photography of the highest standard throughout S.A., adding our unique creative personal touch and always giving you something different. I recently re-located to the small, arty tourist town of Parys on the Vaal River and in my “off-time” I try to spend as much time as possible on or near the river, either fly fishing, kayaking or working on my pet project – a coffee table book of the Vaal River.

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence – Ansel Adams.”
